Video, Image Content from Staff and Audience via New Generation of Apps
Historic New York talk radio station 77 WABC launched a new website and mobile app as part of a new strategy to simplify content creation and consumption. Utilizing InterTech Media’s OneCMS™ platform which combines innovative crowd sourced content, user permission workflow and push notifications, 77 WABC will transform how talent and audience interact with Radio.
Ground Breaking Interactive App
“We’ve been working with and studying how radio staff spend their digital time – publishing to Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter – against other important functions they are trying to prioritize, like working on station platforms which can be monetized. We wanted to close the gap.” says InterTech Media COO, Anthony Polakos. “We quickly realized that we needed to develop a ground up system that enables our radio partners to create rich content from their phones and publish it quickly. With the OneCMS platform, they are now able to do that.”
The content of the 77 WABC website and the app will mirror each other to give the audience a seamless consumption experience regardless of access point.
The app has added functionality for both station staff and audience to contribute content. Both can shoot video, record sound and take pictures for upload – but the publishing workflow, approval process, social media posting and push notifications, are based on if the user submitting is staff or a listener.
“It became apparent the functionality that our partners wanted for station staff, they also wanted for their audience: to contribute to the station in a way they are used to. Our clients want all the videos possible from a public event or from a breaking news story happening in real time. Now whether it’s a personality or a listener, it’s the same app on their phones with user permissions driving the review path.” added CCO, Doug Kilzer. “The success of crowdsourced eyewitness video apps like Citizen reinforces that audiences will contribute meaningful content; we just needed a platform and a way to apply the standards and practices of our partners.”
Staff and Listeners users can submit digital content into channels that are controlled remotely by the station. Channels can be set up in realtime to respond to real life events, concerts and happenings. “With the new OneCMS website and app platform able to create content quicker than before, 77 WABC is positioned to maintain its dominance in tri-state landscape and provide unique opportunities for their advertising partners” added CEO Frank Murray.
New Live Streaming Player
77 WABC is also one of the first websites to introduce OneCMS’ new persistent streaming player. This advanced streaming player, which works on both full desktop browsers and mobile devices, plays the station’s live stream uninterrupted even while the website visitor navigates to different areas of the website.
This proprietary player was developed as more clients requested unique ways to play, style and brand their live stream and increase their listeners by allowing for multiple streams.
“We are super excited about our new proprietary streaming player. It was developed and optimized to be mobile first. It’s lightweight design allows for less assets to load with every page, making for a fast experience for all users.” says Director of Engineering, Duke Noi.
